A new chapter for a much-loved Dean Street building, now operating as Augustus Gelatery Albury in the heart of CBD
Habitat Planning was pleased to have provided planning and advisory services to support the establishment of Augustus Gelatery at 470 Dean Street, Albury, securing development approval for the change of use, fit out, signage and associated building works required to bring the new business to life.
Located within the heart of Albury’s CBD, the site occupies a prominent position on Dean Street, one of the city’s most recognised commercial precincts and an area characterised by historic streetscape and heritage significance. Formerly operating as a music retailer, the building presented opportunity to introduce a new hospitality offering while thoughtfully responding to its established setting.
The approved development enables the premises to operate as a gelato shop, which together with internal and external alterations has created a welcoming space for customers.
The works included a comprehensive internal fit out, featuring an open-plan servery, customer seating, accessible amenities and supporting back-of-house facilities, alongside upgrades to the building façade and replacement business signage.
Given the site’s location within Albury’s heritage conservation area, it was important that the design carefully balanced contemporary improvements with respect for the existing building and its surroundings. The result is a vibrant and family-friendly destination that positively contributes to Dean Street and acknowledges the heritage character that is distinctive of its surrounds.
This was a wonderful project to be involved in and an exciting addition to Albury’s city centre. It also highlights the important role adaptive reuse can play in supporting vibrancy within regional centres, allowing existing buildings to evolve and accommodate new businesses while preserving heritage detail.
Congratulations to our client, Cortesao Pty Ltd, and the broader project team in securing approval for this (delicious) new addition to Dean Street that is now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
